How safe are your tyres?

Recent independent research  by the Motor Industry Research Association has produced some new findings on stopping distances. The findings proved that a car travelling at 50mph on tyres with the legal minimum tread of 1.6mm will take more than 40% more distance to stop in the wet than a car fitted with new tyres with a depth of 6.7mm.

The tests also showed that there was little difference in braking performance between 6.7mm and 4mm but there was a severe drop in stopping power when the tread depth fell below 3.5mm.

The tests were carried out using three different kinds of vehicles, a sports saloon, an executive saloon and a people carrier, which were all fitted with different tyre sizes.

UK tyre experts feel that the UK legal tyre minimum should be 3mm, but the Government will not change the current legislation from 1.6mm.

If you are worried about any aspects of your car’s tyres, please call in and ask for a FREE tyre safety check.

At Brian Jones Auto Services, Wrexham, we recommend that you replace your tyres when the tread depth falls to 3mm. At this depth of tread, there will be some loss in performance under wet braking compared to a new tyre but we feel this offers the best compromise between safety and value for money.

We can offer competitive quotations for all makes and sizes and will usually be able to get any tyre in stock by the following day. All our prices are fully inclusive, i.e. they include fitting, valve, balancing and VAT and also disposal of the old tyres.

Winter Tyres

Tyres react differently according to road temperature. Winter tyres have different materials to enable them to work better on wet and icy roads, stopping your car in shorter distances.

You may feel that we do not get sufficient poor weather in North Wales to justify fitting winter tyres. Yet it is not generally known that ordinary road tyres start to harden in temperatures below 7 degrees C, a figure which is often achieved in the UK in Winter. To counteract this, winter tyres use a higher percentage of silica, rather than carbon black, which changes the way the tyre reacts to colder conditions. The tyre can then grip the road better by ‘keying’ to the surface more effectively.

The winter months which cause most concern are October/November and March/April, where our average monthly temperatures in the UK fall below the critical 7 degrees C. It is no coincidence that motor insurance claims rise dramatically in the month of October, as shorter days combined with falling temperatures offer a greater challenge to the UK motorist.

In the UK, just 0.5% of us go to the trouble of fitting winter tyres, yet in certain EU countries the figure is as high as 90% and fitting winter tyres is seen as the normal thing to do.

If you are interested in fitting winter tyres to your car, please contact us. We have a special offer in place; if you purchase a set of winter tyres from us we will store the unused set completely free of charge.

UK Motorists and Winter driving

Continental tyres carried out a survey of its UK customers and their attitudes to winter driving.

31% said they had had a bad experience whilst driving in the winter

60% of us said we feel nervous driving in the winter

36% have halted a journey due to poor weather

Yet despite this, the following statistics are the most worrying:

65% do not spend any money preparing their car for winter

and

75% say they would not fit winter tyres
